...son to another as it would in real life, there are no interruptions between a character’s speeches, it just carries from one to another. One book that uses the common speech technique is Dark Force Rising. If one were to use the writing style of Cry the Beloved Country to rewrite Dark Force Rising then the reader would have completely no idea as to what is happening. The reason for this is that Dark Force Rising is set in the future and a lot of devices that the characters use are used the communicate, thus the common writing style is quite appropriate for it because it makes this clear and apparent whereas the style used in CTBC is written as things would actually happen in real life, which is somewhat inappropriate for futuristic fiction books. The dialogue style in CTBC is good because it adds life to the story, making it more real. Another particularly special writing method in CTBC is the way the narration is written. It all seems to be from a first person perspective, almost as though the main character is telling the story, which is a bit uncommon in books, at least to this extent. The narration tells what the main character sees through his own eyes, describing it. There is no use of anything like “so-and-so then went to this place”, in CTBC the reader is told what the character is doing as though it was person to person and what the character sees and feels is described to the reader through the character’s eyes. DFR uses the traditional “they all went to this place and saw this and that” style of narration. The characters don’t narrate at all, they are only allowed to speak and only then does the reader find out what they see or how they feel. The narration in CTBC is excellent because it really adds a lot of life to the book. The story being told through the character’s eyes by the character makes it real and believable, as though one was there with him. DFR is already far fetched as it is, maybe if the style of narration was used somewhat in it then it would be more real and believable, of course the CTBC style lacks in detail in terms of explaining to the reader just what is going on precisely enough to be used in a sci-fi novel, which is one of it’s few flaws. Overall the CTBC style is excellent for the story; very believable and real. The most important difference between CTBC and many other books is the way the book reads and feels. The narration and dialogue style all seem to be from the character’s perspective which translates into a very personal story between the reader and the character where the character is telling the story as it unfolds through his own eyes. This is a magnificent way of writing a book because it is just that much more real and in...
