...e steals a nickel from the hunter. Jackson tricks the hunter to leave her by getting the dogs to run off and chase a cur. She says, "Git on away from here, dog! Look! Look at that dog!" (Orr 356). The hunter follows the dogs as they run away. As soon as they left she bent down to pick up the nickel. She again shows courage when the hunter points the gun at her because she does not move an inch. The hunter says, "You must be a hundred years old and scared of nothing" (Welty 60). Jackson's courage is underlined by her encounter with the hunter. Throughout her journey she reveals the goodness in her character. Difficult and important as her trip is, she extracts pleasure from it. For example, when she gets stuck in a thorn bush she speaks to it in good humor. She states, "Thorns, You doing your appointed work. Never want to let folks pass, no sir. Old eyes thought you was a pretty green bush" (Welty 7). Soon after she speaks the kind words to the bush she manages to free herself. She also shows the goodness in her character when she faces a barbed-wire fence.
