Philosophy: creation and technology
...view that I have made, it is not proper to say because the man who is processing in the Chinese room does not function in the same way that the man who really knows Chinese does. Even though an intelligent and bright scientist makes the mind that seems like processing the same as ours, it is not the one because we cannot make their real mind although it is probable to have programs that make them follow. Machines, such as computer, look like processing on purpose and creating new rules; however, it is still predictable in the way that it is done because the commands are also accessed by human being. In the long run, from using machines just we are able to avoid wasting time and live conveniently and fruitfully. It can be seen in the case of chess game that was famous for computer to beat human. Nobody assume that computer can really think and do the chess like human. It is just ‘processed’ and doing this cannot be the same one as human do. Likewise, machine might be smart enough to do something, it is not proper to praise it because the thing that machine does is not form machine itself but from its creator or inventor. If God or something divine creates human being, it is solely up to him not us to make mind or soul for operating one’s mentality. In “Robots and Minds”, William Lycan compares Henry with Henrietta. To make an argument, let’s say that we can reproduce the one from molecules of real human, and make every single part of body component in another case. Who has a mind like real human being? We already reproduced human from transforming the DNA molecules. It is not proved that he or she has the same mental states as normal people, though; his or her cognitive process is not artificial but pretty natural. Because of the fact that the progress and growth of the process is independent upon human, we cannot assert he or she does not have a mind. It inclines towards natural process except its formative period. On the other hand, the latter case is not the same as the former one because of its possibility. Can human make mind thanks to scientific improvement? If so, can we say that he or she also has the same mind as ours? Scientist might make conscious process, and he looks thinking and determining right and wrong like Henry does. He or she can enjoy playing instruments doing sports; however, it is impossible to have ‘freedom’ to choose. That is to say, processing inside the brain and making decision is also in the program that human has made. It cannot have perfect will to behave like ‘real human’. To apply my argument to Lycan’s example, it is inevitable to compare and contrast the cases. The difference between reproducing one and Henrietta is the origin and their chemical composition of anatomy. Reproducing one does not have natural forming process, and it has same chemical compositi...
