In this poem Wheatley writes about how it was the mercy of the Lord that took her away from her pagan land. Thus, this incident helped her find her salvation. She writes, "’Twas mercy brought me from my pagan land, Taught my benighted soul to understand, That there’s a God, that there’s a Savior too: Once I redemption neither sought nor knew" (1-4). She finishes her poem by leaving the reader with the thought that blacks can also "join the angelic train", meaning that all good people will have an admission into heaven, no matter what their skin color is.
