A good example is from my personal experience with interviewing for past jobs. As an executive of a company would you rather have me, a candidate with fifteen years experience in the business, or a twenty-one year old with only a college degree on his resume? Unfortunately, for me, usually the younger person gets the job. Second, is to learn as much as I can. A quote from Robert Theobald sums up how I feel about learning, “There is no limit to the process of learning to learn. Indeed, once human beings have been bitten by the excitement of finding new ways to structure knowledge, they will never again fear being bored.” I could not have said it better myself. I have definitely been “bitten by the bug.” Professionally, learning keeps you up on changes and advances in the business world. For example, learning new management techniques, training tips for employees and new motivational skill to keep your employees moral up. Keeping up with the changes will make me a better manager. Personally, I feel it is important to learn new things everyday, whether it is something as easy as a new word, to a bit of history I did not know. It can also be as difficult as learning Calculus. Everyone has heard the saying “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” by The United Negro College Fund, which is so true. If you do not continue to learn you will not be successful in business or in your personal life. I have a son that is four and twin daughters that are two. It makes sense to me to get back into school now and finish while they are still young. After their high school years I will be able to explain to them, the way to do it is after high school while it is all still fresh in their minds.
