Personal Goals as a student

...er, that degree doesn’t mean that you actually learned anything. Case in point, my company just hired a guy right out of college. He has a Master Degree in CIS. That little piece of paper not only got him the job, but also a rather nice salary. The unfortunate thing is, the poor guy does not even know how to format a hard drive and has never worked on the internals of a PC. Then there is me, I have a number of years of hands-on experience in the Information Technology field and have obtained a good deal of knowledge. While I consider myself to be quite knowledgeable, without a Degree, it is obvious that I will never be recognized as an expert in the field. Amazing what a piece of paper can do for you. However, I do not want to just get that piece of paper, I want for it to really mean something. I want an employer to be able to rest assured that when they hire me, they are getting someone that really knows what they are doing. The second goal that I would like to achieve is better communication skills. Communication skills are vital in the business world. In the IT field they are even more critical. Too often I find it difficult to communicate with non-tech people, using technical terms and nomenclature rather than lay terms when speaking to the ”tech impaired”. My goal is to be able to communicate equally well with my fellow IT professionals and non-technical coworkers, managers, and clients. I believe I already possess above average communication skills; my objective in this case is to further improve upon those skills; especially in the area of group speaking. I have never been good at presenting to groups of people. For much the same reasons I have trouble speaking with non-technical individuals, group speaking is difficult for me as well. When speaking to a group, it is important to try and explain the topic so that all can understand it, not just the tech savvy ones. The final goal I have set out to achieve is to expand my horizons.
