...f Independence was signed, which granted America freedom from England if they won the war. In 1783, Britain surrendered and America obtained independence from England. Considered by many the most important document in America’s history, the U.S. Constitution, written in 1787, established a new government, based on democracy, federalism, and separation of powers. In Document 2, an excerpt from the Constitution, it is written that following their victory over Britain, Americans needed to establish justice, peace, and lay down the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution corrected problems existing under the Articles of Confederation. The Civil War took place between 1861 and 1865. Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860 led the Southern or “slave” states to secede. The Civil War was fought to bring the seceded states back into the Union, under the condition that slavery be abolished. One of the events that contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War was the Nebraska Bill. As shown in Document 3, the Nebraska Bill gave citizens the option to choose between freedom and slavery.
