For what she did, the mayor of the town made Hester stand on the scaffold in the middle of town for an hour, while she was wearing the Scarlet A and holding Pearl. Pearl was needed in this book to help make the book seem more interesting. If there wouldn’t have been a Pearl, there wouldn’t have been much symbolism, such as what happened at the scaffold. Pearl’s character added more mystery and drama to the book. She made it more interesting by her attitude, meaning by attitude described as when she did such things as wash off the kiss that Father Dimmesdale gave her, it Helped your mind think why would she do suck a thing? Pearl was needed in this book to help the mind think, and to add a little more to the book. Just to make it more interesting. Hawthorne added Pearl in opinion, to add a little more spark to the book.
