...rtheast. Of the 94 ships that sat in the harbor, 18 had been either sunk or severely damaged. The lives taken totaled to 2403, which half were killed in the Arizona, another 1178 were injured. During the attack, most of the American planes were destroyed, and only 29 of the Japanese aircrafts were lost, along with 1 submarine, and 5 midget submarines. However, we would have revenge on Japan on August 6, 1945 when we dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. This attack caught America by complete surprise. Everyone did not know what to do; they were frantic because many lives were lost. On December 8, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech to the Congress of the United States and in it he said, “I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” The United States has failed to keep his words true, because once again we were caught by a surprised attack on September 11, 2001. This sad moment is worse than Pearl Harbor for that fact that there were many more deaths in this attack. The Pearl Harbor attack and the recent terrorist attack are also related by the American pride increasing. After both of these attacks Americans pulled together more and showed there support and pride in their nation. Considering I have witnessed the recent attack, I’ve noticed how everyone is “Proud to be an American”, and behind America 100 %. Everywhere you go, you see flags and the statement “United We Stand.” We all mourned the deaths of those innocent lives taken at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon by holding ceremonies among many states, having moments of silence, and saying prayers.
