All the tools can be purchased in your local hardware store’s electrical department: CAT5 cable to desired length, universal UTP stripping tool, modular plug crimp tool, diagonal cutters ("4 to 6"), RJ-45 connectors, and a RJ-45 cable tester. After purchasing the items listed above, you’re now ready to begin physically making a patch cable. First, skin off the cable jacket approximately 1" or slightly more; be sure not to cut the wire(s) within the surrounding jacket. Now that the wire is stripped, and the wires are exposed, untwist each pair, and straighten each wire between your fingers. Subsequent to straightening the wire, place the wires in one of the following orders 568B or 568A from left to right (568B – orange/white, orange, green/white, blue, blue/white, green, brown/white, brown; 568A - green/white, green, orange/white, blue, blue/white, orange, brown/white, brown). Bring all of the wires together, until they touch. At this point, recheck the wiring sequence with the diagram. In conclusion to this step make a mark on the wires at 1/2" from the end of the cable jacket for later use. Now you are in the final step before attaching the RJ-45 connector to your cable. Hold the grouped (and sorted) wires together tightly, between the thumb and the forefinger.
