...d do research on how the programs have helped produce many model citizens in the community and how they help keep kids off the street and out of trouble. The programs give the people something to do and meet new friends in the process. It makes the overall community a much better place. If they cut the funding to these programs there will more than likely be an increase in crime throughout the community and will only cause more of a headache for the city council. Another important piece of information that I received from the text was that, “according to functionalist theory, social systems operate smoothly when they have efficient mechanisms for doing four things: (1) socializing people to learn and accept important cultural values, (2) promoting social connections between people, (3) motivating people to achieve cultural goals through accepted methods, and (4) protecting the system from disruptive outside influences.” This fits in perfectly with my argument of why the city council should not cut funding to the programs.
