Disneyworld, Fantasia, balloons, clowns & horses will appear right before their very eyes just by imagining it. It was with good intentions that George had purchased the nursery and had it specifically built for the house. “Nothing is too good for our children, and it’s good to exercise one’s mind with gymnastic fantasies” , George had told Lydia when Lydia was skeptical of the nursery. Lydia’s skepticism grew some teeth when the children tired of normal childhood fantasies inside the nursery and their attention and imagination had turned the nursery into a veldt. [A veldt is open grassland usually associated with the southern regions of Africa- an area where lions roam freely about the landscape.] After a time Wendy and Peter had turned the nursery exclusively into a veldtland. No more fun filled fantasies for the Hadley children. Now their nursery time was spent in a barren wasteland with a small watering hole, oppressive heat and lions. As the children continued to keep the nursery in the veldt setting George too began to have some concerns for the children’s mental well being. George had been inside the nursery in its veldtland form and observed the lions from a distance as they ate their prey near the watering hole after a fresh kill. While George did not take issue with the children’s inquisitive minds wanting to visit foreign lands, why they had settled into the veldt left him a little unnerved. And what to make of the killing? This worried George the most. He wondered to himself: “These deaths that the lions have wrought- are the children too young to be imagining death thoughts? Or is the thought of wishing death upon Kelly 3 someone or something a trait children inherit at a young age before they even know what death is?” Little did George know how prophetic his thoughts would be. It was in the veldt that George and Lydia would meet with their demise. George had threatened Wendy and Peter that the nursery would be shut down if they did not take it out of the veldtland mode. Shortly there after, the two adorable children locked their mother and father into the veldt with the lions. George and Lydia Hadley would soon become the fresh kill that the lions mauled and roared at over by the watering hole. Or were they there all along? Adolescent’s need the proper building blocks- assets to become healthy and caring children and young adults. Parents have the arduous task of trying to help their children develop their mentality. One way to achieve this is through positive interaction and unequivocal support. Why did it end like this for the Hadley parents?
