His first main stage was called the blue period. This lasted from 1901 to about 1904. During this time his paintings had distinct shades of blue through them and they were very depressing. The artworks, which were portraits, were mainly of homeless and poor people. The next main stage in Picasso’s career was the rose stage. This lasted only one year from 1905-1906. In this period there is a dominant pink colour throughout his works and a fun aspect is created. He got most of his ideas from the circus and acrobats. Picasso’s creativeness in the styles of primitivism and cubism was unusual for that day. Most of the artists of that day were still using the renaissance styles of painting so Picasso’s work was very challenging. The way that he deformed and simplified figures was astounding for that day and was quit shocking in the views of most critics. But as the world began to free itself from the boundaries that European renaissance art had put it in, the people and critics of the time also began to accept that art is an expression not a discipline.
