Ozone depletion
...sity. The amount depends on the extent of the light absorbed, the length of time of the exposure, and whether or not the skin was protected by clothing or sunscreen while tanning. Amundson (1999) claimed that the result of the exposure to sunlight is skin aging. Consequently because of frequent UV light exposure and sunburn, the skin experiences photo aging, which is characterized by wrinkles, altered pigmentation, and a “loss of elasticity” in the skin. When is the sunlight most intense, it is the most dangerous for human skin. It causes sunburns and skin aging. Melanoma is the most aggressive and “malignant” form of skin cancer, and it is known to spread and be mortal to humans. Melanoma is a result of the childhood sunburns common by youths and adolescents, and the increased amount of time people spend in the sun, especially blond haired people. “Australians have the highest incidence of malignant melanoma. About one in every 150 white male Queenslanders dies of malignant melanoma”(Godlee, 1999). The two most common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Both are rarely found on dark-skinned people, and are very common among red or blonde haired people, especially those that freckle easily (Godlee, 1999). Ozone depletion also causes considerable damage to the human eye, most commonly in the form of cataracts. Cataracts are a significant problem in today’s world. This gradual loss in transparency of the lens of the eye is the leading cause of blindness. The lens consists of three parts: the nucleus, the cortex, and the capsule. The nucleus is the center of the lens, the cortex is the outside of the lens, and the capsule is the film that envelops the lens. Cataracts can form in any of these parts. Several types of cataracts exist, according to their location in the eye. Nuclear cataracts form directly inside of the eye, known as the nucleus. Cortical cataracts form around the center of the eye, known as the cortex. Sub capsular cataracts form in the envelope of the lens. Common symptoms of cataracts are: dim ability to see, loss of clearness in colors, sensitivity to bright sunlight, troubles to see the space and close sight. Cataracts are direct results of the exposure to UVR (Lighthouse International, n.d.). All people, regardless of skin pigmentation, are inclined to damage to their immune system as a result of UVR from the sun. The absorption of UV rays leads to immunosuppression, which can lead to infections and cancer as well. As a result, cancer often develops and spreads in the body because the immune system has not the strength to fight it due to its suppression by damaging UVR. Other immune system damage is seen in the form of skin hypersensitivity. Clearly, UVR is very dangerous to the human immune system and guides to cancer and other contagions, life-threatening diseases (Jeevan & Kripke, 1998) The protection during sunny days is very important due to the dangerous UV rays from the sun. As the ozone layer is thinning, it is more and more dangerous for human health. While tanning, it is necessary to protect the skin with several preventions. Tanning has become very popular because of chocolate-colored skin. Nobody wants to realize that it has very negative impact on his or her health. Ability to see only the result, the chocolate skin is very misleading. In reality it means that their skin is being damaging by the sun. Before going outside, as a protection, applies sunscreen that has a sunburn protection factor (SPF), wear a hat or cap, and wear UV-certified sunglasses...
