Overpopulation
... and depletion of our natural resources. Today we already experience the problems with food shortages. There are about three billion people in the world that suffer from malnutrition. This is almost half the world’s entire population. Malnutrition is one of the main reasons there is an increase for susceptibility to diseases such as diarrhea and malaria. Since 1983 the world’s food per person has been declining. This pattern is easiest observed when watching the grains per capita. Every person born adds to the overall decline in food per capita. If this pattern continued for another one hundred years, only two billion people would be able to live with standards half that of U.S citizens during the 1990’s. This presents a major problem. Studies show that the decline in food per capita is related to the global 15% decrease in water irrigation and a 23% decrease in the use of fertilizers. Yes much of the world is made of water, but this is salt water that cannot be used for drinking or farming. Everyday there are 200,000 more people than the day before. And as the people increase, so will the rate. The world reached its first billion in 1804. This took the human race 200,000 years to reach. The second billion came only 123 years later. Then, by 1960 we reached our third billion, a mere thirty three years later. Since then, we will add a billion every thirteen to fourteen years. This is the kind of pressure on the environment that many people believe will be the end of the world. The next problem we must look at is what are our leaders going to do about it? Chin...
