...r became a metaphor for “able” and “angel”. In the end of “The Scarlet Letter” after Dimmesdale released the sin throughout the world, the letter had vanished, yet Hester sill wore it. Hester became attached to the sins, which made her stronger. Without the letter upon her, she would have no strength or anything to keep her together in the bad times. The letter had always been there for over 7 years, Hester became dependent on it. Even when Chillingworth appeared on the beach and said that the town was considering having the letter removed, Hester refused because of her dedication to keeping her sin. Hester’s major meaning for keeping the letter on though was not entirely her dedication. It was Pearl, Pearl was considered by many to be a living example of the Scarlet letter, with the letter off Pearl had lost her connection to Hester. This connection was to make Hester remember her sin until it was casted throughout the world, until then Pearl would be a disease that is incurable. Edna Pontellier was equally considered to be an outcast but not in the same way as Hester. Edna did not have a living example or have to wear a letter but in the end, her sins took the toll on her. Feeling as though her life to be over with because of loneliness, she started having a friendship with Robert. This was acceptable by everyone’s standards, but when Edna became dependent on Robert that is when the affair actually started. Leonce knew something was up but he was made into such a 2d character that he didn’t have it in him to know it was Robert or to figure it out for himself, his doctor had to point it out. This obsession with not being alone carried on through Reisz, Alcee, and Robert; Edna did not need her husband anymore. Leonce was thinking that they just needed a break from each other so he left for a business trip, not knowing this would only make things worse in the end, for both of them. Edna jumped on the fact that he was gone; this left her with a lot of time with her secret lovers, without being caught. As in all love stories, the other lovers eventually find out then there is hatred towards everyone. This was the case in a way. Robert came out with his true feelings for Edna, which were not what Edna had expected. Robert not knowing Edna’s immaturity and obsession with him started thinking of suicide. Edna reminds me of a teenager, doing stupid things, and acting stupid but she is different in that most people do not actually enjoy it later in life.
