...s is because “honest Iago” uses carefully thought out words and actions which enable him to manipulate others and do things in a way which benefits him and move closer to his goals. And at the same time move the plot. Iago is the main character of this play, not the title character Othello. Iago’s role is to direct how the plays plot progresses, Iago pushes Othello and everyone else towards their tragic ends. The role he plays is unique and complex. Iago is a smart man, he is an expert judge of character and knows people’s weaknesses very well and uses this to exploit them. He knows that Roderigo is in love with Desdemona and know he would do anything to have her. He has knowledge that Othello’s passions flare up very quickly and Desdemona is a kind soul who wishes to help a friend. He uses all of these personal details to plot the downfalls of his friends. Though out the play Iago is knows and called “honest Iago” at one point in the play he even says this himself “I am a honest man”. Iago is a master of deceiving, during the play people rarely stop to consider the possibility that Iago is deceiving or manipulating them. Iago tricks Othello into believing that his own wife is having an affair without any evidence.
