Some people think that prayer in schools would violate their First Amendment. The First Amendment reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the exercise thereof.”. The first clause merely declares that the federal government cannot establish one religion for all the people. The second clause states that the government should do nothing to discourage religion. But forbidding prayer in schools discourages religion. In 1962, the Supreme Court passed a law forbidding prayer in schools. Schools are government funded and so that insists that schools are like the government. At the beginning of that trial, this prayer was said: “God, save this honorable court.”. If the government can pray, how come we can’t. When Congress meets, a prayer is said at the beginning of every meeting. If the government can pray, how come the governed can’t. There was prayer in the nation’s schools for nearly 200 years. The morality of the society during this period was very stable. However, after the law in 1962, all of the moral and values seemed to diminish. In the span between 1960 and 1990, divorce doubled, teenage pregnancy went up 200%, teen suicide increased 300%, child abuse reached an all-time high, violent crime went up 500%, and abortions increased 1000%. After 30 years of schools without prayer, you would think that Congress would grow some cahonas and do something about the fact that the nation is falling apart.
