Orestes 2.0

...ions stars Ryan Phillipe as Sebastian, a young man confused between love, truth, and manipulation. His twisted sister offers him a challenge, requiring him to choose between the three. In the end, he chooses love, but far too late, because manipulation and truth win the battle, and he dies at the movie’s conclusion in an almost not-so-fair way. Orestes 2.0 is like Cruel Intentions in that Orestes and Elektra have choices in the way they handle guilt. Both can choose truth and face the music and pressure, or they can choose to run from the truth. It’s interesting, because they choose both. Orestes chooses truth, but not at first. He does three things. First, he blames the murder and guilt on the demons. Second, he justifies the murder of his mother because she committed adultery on his father. Finally, Orestes tries to ‘politik’ his uncle, an influential community leader, in hopes he and sister won’t be executed. In the end, he hones up to the killings and suggests he and his sister execute themselves, for it would be a much better death than getting ‘stoned’ by the community. From the beginning, Elektra is in denial. She falls apart. She cannot fathom the idea of dying, let alone taking her own life. The point in the play that emphasis a complete emotional breakdown is when she begins to sing – she sings her pain and guilt away because it is unbearable. And when it comes time to commit suicide, she just can’t do it. She begs her brother Orestes to do it for her, to kill her, because she is unable to take her own life. Throughout the trial, Orestes is faced with choices. He can admit to the murders and work towards esuading the jury, attempting to convince them to lessen or drop his sentencing. Or, he can take it, like a man. Interesting enough, he takes the persuasion route, and his arguments are completely off the wall.
