...at is acceptable behavior in our daily lives. The business world is no exception to these rules. Many organizations have policies in place that define what is acceptable behavior when dealing with fellow employees, the organization’s customers or end-users, and with management. This is where organizational behavior (OB) begins. The textbook defines OB as “… a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness” (Robbins 16). Therefore, OB studies how individuals and groups differ in how they perceive events around themselves, how effective their interpersonal communication is, how they handle conflict and stress, what motivates them, and how they learn. As each individual is unique, each area may be, and WILL be, different from individual to individual. Identifying these factors within the individual will assist managers in dealing with multiple issues as they come along. What motivates one individual may not motivate another.
