In this book the United States risks lives, reputation and the position of our country in the world. The war is being fought for freedom from communism. During the war the armed forces also uncover many secrets that are being kept by the Koreans. The main character of this book is Paul Hood. He acts as a professional spy for the United States government. Hood is the director of the Special Forces group referred to as Op-center. He is a very strong and stubborn man who likes taking odors from no one and is aggravated when things go wrong. This quote is of Paul Hood after discovering the death of several of his crewmembers. ’’This can’t happen, this can’t happen, this can’t happen!’’(150) Tom Clancy does a great job of showing the reader exactly what is going on because of the way he uses his words. In the story he talks about an operative who notices spies stopping into this same place but in different disguises. ’’Hood finally realized, each time it was the same men stopping but disguised to look like different individuals so no one would be suspicious.’’ (163) He then talks about how the operative notices the same chronic bad breath. The kind you can smell from across the room. That line right there told me a whole lot about this spy. It also showed that this spy was not doing everything possible to change his disguise. He also talks about the atmosphere of the bar where the operative works and comments on the stale air as well as the continuous background noise that is going on. This really lets the reader ...
