Lastly, when Faith met the 2nd man that she thought was Damon Bradley at the pool, she immediately was taken aback by his looks. If this man had any name other then Damon Bradley, she might not have been as attracted to him as she was. These examples clearly represent romantic love. There are also problems with romantic love. Three of these problems are that it is often initiated by appearance, it has unrealistic expectations and that it doesn’t last. The fact that romantic love is initiated by appearance is illustrated when the group is at the pool and they see the unattractive man laying in the chair. This man could be the love of Faith’s life but because she is not attracted to him, she glances past him. Another limitation of romantic love is that it has unrealistic expectations. Faith believed that when she met Damon Bradley she would immediately fall into this love of the ages and they would ride off in a horse and carriage to live happily ever after. This does not happen in the real world and for her to believe that it would was completely unrealistic. The third limitation of romantic love is that it doesn’t last. When Duane and Faith were together, it didn’t seem like there was too much chemistry between them. This relationship was probably very romantic at first but, as time passed, the couple grew farther and farther apart. These are the main examples of limitations of romantic love in the film. Sternberg says that love is made up of three components. These components are intimacy, passion, and decision making. In a successful relationship, all three components must be balanced between partners.
