A difference between the old man and Christ is that the old man was made fun of a lot every time he went to the Terrace, “…fishermen made fun of the old man… pg 11 line 7” the reason this is different from Christ is that nobody really made fun of Christ, but people did make fun of the old man. Also another difference is that the old man was pitied by some of the fisherman. There are other likenesses between Christ and the old man in the middle of the novel, and there are also many differences between the old man and Christ in the second part of the novel. A similarity between Christ and the old man is that he has a lot of faith, “He hasn’t much faith…But we have… pg 10 line 24 pg 11 line 1” this value is compared to Christ because the old man is talking about him having faith in catching a giant fish, and Christ had faith in god. In the novel faith was a very valuable thing and that is one of the main reasons the old man didn’t give up. Another one of the old man’s resemblances to Christ is that he had humility, “…he had attained humility. But he knew he had attained it…pg 13 line 23 pg 14 line 1” in the book humility was another value that set the old man apart from most of the other fishermen. A contrast between the old man and Christ is that he didn’t have any followers or friends except for the boy, Manolin. The reason he is different from Christ was because everybody else stayed away from him, which is very different from Christ because he had other people that followed his cause. Yet another contrast between the old man and Christ was that the old man got cared for, and fed, and clothed by other people mainly being the boy. The reason he was taken care of was because he was poor. At the end of the novel there are even more likenesses and differences between the old man and Christ.
