The man in the story, Dr. Charles Ain, is traveling the world with the narrative of his love, a struggle, and obvious anguish over his woman. This is because the companion he has come to love, appreciate, and respect is dying by the hands of others. This mystery love is described as beautiful, plentiful, and even miraculous. That is because what he is so obsessed with is the planet Earth. Earth is his love, his passion, and his infatuation. Dr. Ain came to love her “shadowed places and her white rounded glory in the moonlight” (243). He couldn’t handle others being so disrespectful, harmful, and eventually killing his love. As a biologist, Dr. Ain decided he was going to do something about the human race ruining their own planet which he loved dearly. He designed his own mutated Leukemia virus. This virus he created, “performed very well airborne” (244). Wherever he went, he was feeding birds, tracking their migration route. Thus, the birds helped spread the disease for him. He also didn’t take a direct flight. The more places he went, the more he could spread his disease around. However, this virus only affected higher life forms, humans.
