Neptune

... is that, like Jupiter’s great red spot, Neptune has a great dark spot. But it is only half the size of Jupiter’s. The Atmosphere “When the Voyager-2 spacecraft flew past the Neptune in 1989, its instruments revealed a surprising array of meteorological phenomena, including strong winds, bright, high-altitude clouds, and two large dark spots attributed to long-lived giant storm systems.” (2) When NASA tracked the storm, it led them right to the area. Known as Neptune’s Great Dark Spot. As I mentioned earlier, Neptune’s Great Dark Spot, is a giant cloud formation, much like a storm, that has been raging on for centuries. Each day we learn more and more about Neptune, thanks to the help of the Hubble Telescope. Any other information that we have about Neptune, other than that we received from the spaceship Voyager 2, we have received from the Hubble Telescope. From what we gathered we have learned that the actual face and inside of the planet. It is quite hot, but near the cloud formations in the atmosphere, the temperature can go all the way down to –260 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to the difference in temperature between such a short distances, storms on Neptune are caused due to the freezing weather from above, mixing with the intense heated weather below. “In addition to hydrogen and helium, the main constituents, Neptune's atmosphere is composed of methane and hydrocarbons, like ethane and acetylene.” (3) Neptune’s moons Known to us, Neptune has only 8 moons that have been discovered. Voyager 2 discovered 6 of them after the other two had been discovered. Triton, Neptune’s largest moon, was not discovered by Voyager, but earlier on in 1846. Triton is by far Neptune’s largest moon, by a couple thousand KM. The other 7 moons are called: Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Galatea, Larissa, Proteus, and Nereid. Voyager 2 The last two spacecraft of NASA's Mariner series, Voyager 1 and 2 were the first in that series to be sent to explore the outer solar system. Preceded by the Pioneer 10 and 11 missions, Voyager 1 and 2 were to make studies of Jupiter and Saturn, their satellit...
