Nature in Mishima’s The Sound of Waves
... feels a storm inside of himself and nature is raging outside. He is unafraid of the storm as he goes to meet Hatsue at the lighthouse. Yet it acts as a warning to him when he and Hatsue get to close. The mist from the waves looks like Uncle Teru’s face. He is then warned not to proceed. The mist smiles at him when he agrees reluctantly not to pursue the matter with Hatsue. When Shinji is trying to save the boat by swimming to the buoy, the typhoon is similar to the challenge Shinji faces. In fact, it even challenges him. Then the storm lifts him up on the buoy as if the wave god were saying to Shinji – “See you were faithful to me and now I will help you.” The day after the storm, Shinji see that the sky and see are tranquil. This symbolizes that something good will come to Shinji now that he as weathered the storm. Indeed, something good does come.
