This quote shows that the river says what Siddhartha is unconsciously blocking out of his own soul, therefore being Siddhartha’s mysterious soul in water. Additionally, the river is always the same, yet always different. As Siddhartha is discovering a new life, he also discovers something about the river shown in the following quote. “He saw that the water continuously flowed and flowed and yet it was always there; it was always the same and yet every moment it was new”(102). Similar to the mysterious ways of the soul, the river is new every moment, yet it never seems to change on the outside. Furthermore, the river knows all the knowledge of the world, but the information has to be discovered, just like a soul.
