...wrote a book “which dealt with the difficulties of English in India”, a book that many “Americans read”, resulting with a “cheque sent to him.” The book became very well read with Americans. They would feel better about themselves as they read the book. In the end, giving the author money to give into his desire for property. But even though his property was “not a large wood” he still felt like he “could not move around a lot” because “his wood made him feel heavy.” His property was little, containing scarcely any tress. But merely his purchase of the property created shame within himself. A shame he could not rid because of his desires. The act of the author purchasing the property was a result of him giving into his desire, which in turn caused him to feel guilty. The first person central point of view allows the reader to experience the desire and shame that the author experiences himself. Forster takes the “cheque to [him]” and purchases the “first property [he] has owned.” The author earned his check through a book he wrote. Forster’s desire is finally given into as he purchases the wood property. After his purchase, Forster questions “the effect on [him] of [his] wood” because his wood “makes [him] feel heavy.” The author believes that property effects ones character. By purchasing the wood, Forster is not able to move around freely, and eventually will fail when trying to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Forster’s first person central point of view in this passage allows the reader to experience the desire and shame that Forster personally experiences through his actions. The organization of the passage “My Wood” moves from desire to questioning to explanation. In the beginning of the passage, the author gives into his desire by purchasing the property. But he then tries to decrease the degree of the desire by depicting the property. Forster does this to put the idea of materialism in the reader’s mind. In the middle, Forster questions the effect of property on a person’s character. More clearly, the author wants to know the effect of property on him. Forster does this to cause the reader to question the effect that their own properties and desires have on themselves. In the end, the author explains the sin of owning property. Forster states that property creates to get into the Kingdom of Heaven. Forster does the effects of property on ones character.
