...lf to a map. In this extended metaphor Donne uses “East and “West” to describe his death and resurrection. This use of metaphor brings up the way in which life and death is a cycle, west being where the sunsets and East where it rises, it is all apart of a cycle and ultimately lead from one to another. In line 11, Donne compares his fever to a “strait” in doing this he tells the reader his fever is like a current pushing him down the narrow channel to death and not being able to turn back. This line 11 “ I joy…….I see my West” also furthers the whole “West” symbolism in that he can see that death is near. In line 13 Donne uses a rhetorical question, “What shall my West hurt me?” this is used to express Donne’s queries about death, asking how will his death affect his resurrection or his “West”. In line 15 “So death doth touch the resurrection” alliteration is used to emphasize “death doth” in doing this Donne discusses how death will not affect the new life after death, that it will be a new beginning. In lines 16-17 “Is the Pacifique Sea my home…….” The “Pacifique Sea”, “The Easterne riches”, and “Jerusalem” are used by Donne to ponder where will his new life be born, where will his resurrection be. Furthering lines 16-17 is line 20 “Where Japhet dwelt, or Cham, or Sem”. The allusion in this case is used to further the previous lines about where Donne’s rebirth will be. Japhet, Cham and Sem being in biblical terms the sons of Noah who where the ancestors of the three races of man. Conceit is introduced in line 23-5 “…..Both Adam’s met in me;” this is referring to Donne life.
