The Brady Bill enforces a five-day waiting period for purchasing a handgun; and it provides background checks on the person buying the gun (Zimring). There are also laws and restrictions on what kind of a gun we can own. In the 1939 Supreme Court decision in United States v. Miller case a shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches long was found to be illegal. This is because it would not be used by a well-regulated militia (Gottfried, 34). What Gun Owners Can Do The gun owners of America can do many things that will help make sure that their second amendment right is not infringed. One easy thing that all gun owners should do is follow the National Rifle Association (NRA) gun safety rules which are: 1. Store guns away from people that are not authorized to use them. 2. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. 3. Be sure the gun is safe to use. 4. Know how to safely use the gun. 5. Use the correct ammunition. 6. Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. 7. Never hand somebody a gun unless the chamber is open and empty. 8. And always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Gun owners should also make sure they follow their state laws about guns. You have a right to own a gun but you have to use it responsibly (Gottfried, 53).
