When jack and Ralph were going to explore the island and decided they needed another person and they chose Simon out of all the other eager boys but all the boys laughed when he was picked. I think Simon's loyalty and kindness are obvious from an early stage in the book. Simon is the only on who is nice to the "littluns" in chapter 4. He helped the ’littluns’ get fruit to eat. Another person Simon is nice to when no one else is, is Piggy. In chapter 7 Simon gives Piggy a piece of meat. Simon is the only one who is not scared . He was the one who volunteered to go back in the darkness and tell piggy they would be later. He is also the one who helped Ralph build the shelters when the rest of the boys played. These acts of kindness where not appreciated by the boys. We know this because when Simon is telling them there is nothing to be afraid of except fear itself the boys say he is nuts and he’s batty.
