...ng skills will have a direct reflect on the Navy and therefore affecting my advancement. Culture is a great impact on my present writing skills. I grew up in Jamaica. Jamaica writing style originates from England where certain words are pronounces different. (i.e. check is spell cheque in Jamaica and schedule is pronounce as Skedule) Sometimes when I write I used the English derived from my own country. Even though English is the native language for Jamaica; we normally use slang that combines different languages called Phatua. Phatua sometimes come out in my writing. I used this slang for the first seventeen years of my life. Normally when I write letters, I expect it to be scrutinized by my chain of command. This gets very embarrassing. My speaking ability stems from a family with a long history of speech delay, mostly on both my mother and father side of the family. I did not speak until I was four. Growing up in Jamaica, I did not have the resources that are available in this country to help me develop my speaking abilities. Apart from not being able to pronounce words properly, I grew up been very timid. Most of the time, I only speak when I was required to. The problems I faced now are my ability to speak publicly. When I speak publicly, due to nervousness I sometime lose my listeners. Either the pitch of my voice will change to a point where they are unable to hear what I am speaking about, or my ascent become domineering and they do not understand some of the words I use. In my present career, I have to train my personnel. I have to speak well enough for them to understand. Majority of the time when they does something wrong they blame it on them not being able to understand my teaching. My superiors also comments on my poor communication skills. At the University of Phoenix, I will have the opportunity to work on improving my speaking ability. There are several resources available for me to use. The presentation that I do in class will give me the practice I need to become a better speaker. My dream as a child is to own my own accounting firm.
