My Life in Travels
...n’t have a lot of money to travel with. All my childhood trips were all along the west coast of BC and the USA. We took trips as a family to California, to Montana, to Oregon, Alberta, Washington, Mexico. But even though I thouroughly enjoyed these adventures, I wanted something more. For me that “more” was Europe. I really don’t know why the connection to Europe. Maybe it was the books I read, who knows? All I knew was I wanted to get lost in Europe, I wanted to lose myself in Europe. And when I was 18, I did. Some friends invited me to stay with their parents in Germany, to work in their bakery part time and travel part time. Now, working in a German bakery is not very glamourous. Working in any bakery is not very glamourous for that matter. But I didn’t care. I could finally take my own photographs instead of looking at sites in a book. I saved up some more money and went back almost year after year. Whether it was visitin friends who had moved to London or taking a walking tour of Ireland, I just couldn’t get enough. When I was 26, my mother threw a bit of a spanner in the works. She asked me if I would consider travelling with her. Instantly I thought of Prague. I had been reading something on Prague and it said “Prague was the new Paris”. I could do Prague. But my mother had another idea. She wanted to go to Malaysia. I was born in Malaysia. I came here when I was about 2. I don’t remember anything about it. The only thing I know about Malaysia was what my parents said. Malaysia was hot. Malaysia was humid. Malaysia is dirty. I didn’t want to go to Malaysia. But for my mother, she couldn’t travel by herself and needed someone to be with her. So I kissed Prague goodbye and packed my bags for Malaysia Well my parents were right. Malaysia is hot. Malaysia is humid and yes, there are some places where Malaysia is dirty. But when you walk along the beach and see the sun sets, when you walk along the streets and get a scent of sweet jasmine, you end up becoming intoxicated with that country.
