Adults should be allowed to view whatever they choose. It was reported that over 99% of all American households had at least one television in 1999. With technology increasing, many parents can restrict certain prgrams and stations that their children watch, but technology increases quickly to new and better things. Many new inventions, such as the v-chip, select what kind of programming can be veiwed on your television. New parental guidelines, such as; TVY, TVY7, TVY7FV, TVG, TVPG, TV14, and TVMA, let adults know what kind of program is being aired. These ratings range from television for young viewers to television for mature audiences. These small ratings on the top corner of these televisions simplify and ease the process of filtering morbid and innapropriate picture shows. Compact discs were released to the public in 1983. Rock artists were widely famous and rap was beginning. As rock slowly decreased and rap took over the lyrics got worse. In 1990 a rap album by 2 Live Crew, entitled As Nasty As We Wanna Be, was rejected from man stores. One clerk at a music store was arrested for selling the cd to a 14 year old boy. Rappers on probation and parole were even arrested for these obscene lyrics. New laws and regulations were then introduced to decrease the violence and vulgarity of these discs. Tipper Gore also held campagnes to raise awaeness and stop the messages sent to children through these albums. The Parents Music Resource Center, led by Tipper Gore in the mid nineteen eightees, fought against “porn rock.” This groups actions cleaned up cds covers and lyrics and presented a new parental advisory label. Most of these advised cds were offered in an edited format for younger audiences. Many original albums, even though unedited, have still been edited because of terroristic threats and harrasment. The parental advisory labels are still active today cause fewer problems for parents and children. Tipper Gores struggle is still not over, she intends to fight for this cause for years to come until there is no problem to fight for. Many actions are being taken today to restrict the negative music that is being sold in Americas stores. Edited versions of these cds can be purchased instead of the filthy versions or some stores refuse to sell these discs. Wal-Mart is in the middle of controversy over there denial to sell many cds due to the nasty lyrics and poictures in the albums. K-Mart now participates in these filtering actions also. K-Mart, while rejecting some cds, mostly sells edited versions, becausee they are a family store. Through K-Mart investigations, many young children, even the ages of nine years old, were shown to purchase rap albums.
