What the intelligence test does not do is inform us about our other intelligences; it also doesn't look at other virtues like creativity or civic mindedness, or whether a person is moral or ethical. We don't do much IQ testing anymore, but the knowledge of IQ tests is still with us because of the SAT, arguably the most potent examination in the world, is basically the same kind of instrument to test a students knowledge. It is fallible according to Gardner because “it doesn’t properly test a person’s ability or it is only limited to a few intelligences and not all seven.” When I took an IQ test online all I seem to have been tested on were my math skills and language skills, never being tested for being musically gifted or good at interpersonally communicating with others. How can a college properly evaluate someone through this narrow minded test? I completely understand why Gardner says we suffer from the bias of the “testist.” If society can incorporate the seven intelligences into life putting aside just the “westist” view where only mathematical and verbal skills count people would be able to shine with other abilities they are skilled at. We can all get better at each of the intelligences, although some people will improve in an intelligence area more readily than others, either because biology gave them a better brain for that intelligence or because their culture gave them a better teacher. Gardner says “Teachers have to help students use their combination of intelligences to be successful in school, to help them learn whatever it is they want to learn, as well as what the teachers and society believe they have to learn.” This way one can have a better adapted education to fit and expand their intelligence.
