The first few years I admit that I lost the influence and ideas that I got while living in Chicago but as I got older and interacted with more people I began to return to my roots. Living in a community like Alpharetta it is tough sometimes to put cultural captivity behind, but if you look hard enough you can see the impact other cultures have on our society, especially living so close to a large and diverse city like Atlanta. I believe that location has a very big effect on influences and cultural captivity. One thing in particular that made me realize how diverse and different my own school and community are was the Privilege Walk that we participated in during class. This showed me how diverse my very own class is when I normally just look around and see a majority of white people. But what the Privilege Walk helped me realize is that just because all of us have the same skin color doesn’t mean that we have the same past and influences. I think realizing that really helped me move past the state of cultural captivity that I was in. One of the main aspects of cultural captivity is failing to realize that even though you live in a community where your race is the majority and all your close friends are of the same race as you, you are still influenced by other cultures all the time. Being able to accept that is the key to moving forward in life. There was a time in my life that I was ignorant to the fact that I am a multicultural being. But as I started to move out of my own cultural captivity I began to try to influence my friends to recognize that we are surrounded by so many different cultures and that they should try to grasp the influence they have on us. I was happy to see them begin to move forward in their understanding of the concept. Like I said earlier, I only began to move out of the state of cultural captivity as we started talking about these ideas in class.
