The area where mostly Chinese people moved was the west coast, because geographically, it is closer to China. They started to build their own town that was called ¡°China Town¡±. They lived in apart in ¡®Ethnic Islands¡¯. This led to little cultural diffusion, which led to discrimination. Korea had difficulty in this era in the late 1800¡¯s to early 1900¡¯s too. They were under Japanese control until 1945, and some Korean founding fathers wanted to get away from the Japanese form of government. They started to move to Manchuria in China, and other lands. The first Korean generation that moved to United States was for religious reason. Korea believed strongly in Buddhism. Those who were against Buddhism, in Korea people wanted to find their religious freedom. They started to move to Hawaii like when the Pilgrims start moved to United States. Besides religious reasons, they also wanted to work at farms, as the Chinese did. ¡°The main occupation of Korean immigrants newly arrived in America from about 1900 to 1910, like the Chinese and Japanese before them. The Koreans provided the plantations of Hawaii with their principle source of labor.¡± (Reimers 96). After Korea became free from Japanese control, many people moved to California, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. But it was really hard to live with different people who have different skin, and culture. ¡°Unlike the Chinese and Japanese, Koreans considered themselves permanent immigrants and hoped to remain in the United States, even though their treatment was as terrible as that of other Asians. Most Americans could not distinguish Koreans from Japanese and treated them with the same cruelty the Japanese experienced.¡± (Wepman175). But Korean people endured all that kind of harsh treatments for the benefit of the next generations. Koreans were discriminated against in work, living conditions, and schools. They solved discrimination problems by using their brains, but not physically. Many United States of American people looked for get new experienced since middle of 1900. When Americans understood Korean¡¯s culture, tradition, and customs, and also Korean people gets understand American¡¯s culture, too. Another immigrant group is Japanese. Some Japanese people came to escape the government, but most came for work and to find a better life as the Chinese people and Korean people were. ¡°Japanese immigration to the United States began with a few political exiles in 1869. Most of the immigrants to Hawaii before 1900 were contract laborers imported by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association.¡± (Daniels166). And also the island of Japan is smaller than the state of California, and they have many mountains, which can¡¯t farm. They had to look for another fertile lands for agriculture.
