His mother, Odessa Grady Clay, worked as a cook and housecleaner. His father, Cassius Clay Senior, was a sign painter to support his family. He also painted murals on black churches to gain extra money. Ali discovered his love for boxing in quite an awkward way. Ali began boxing when he was 12 after his new bike he received from his father for Christmas, was stolen. He reported the theft to policeman Joe Elsby Martin, who invited to Ali to train for boxing.
