... It became quite clear that both Erasmus and More desired a modified life. They were heartily upset with their society’s policies and therefore criticize them repeatedly. An example of this can be seen in the societal structure of Erasmus’ In Praise of Folly. In this book modesty, humility and poverty replace the actual life style characteristics of pomposity, power, and wealth. Erasmus states, with regards to war, “what more foolish than to undertake it (war) for I know what trifles (Erasmus 10).” This clearly reveals Erasmus’ message of Purity and reform. Also, in More’s Utopia, each citizen is given more respect with less work, no occupational criticism, and freedom from corrupt politics. Also, More discusses specific contemporary evils. For Example with reference to gambling, he states, “For what pleasure is there (say they in casting the dice upon a table (160).”These examples show that both of these authors desired a world where peace and justice reigned over power and corruption. Another parallel concept found in these books is that of education. Both advocated education as a means of social triumph and success. This Quality can be traced to both authors belief that education of the bible and other ancient Sources would lead one to the to the truth of life In Utopia, some are spared from doing work so that they can develop their educational capabilities. This reveals the importance that More places on education. The third similarity found between Erasmus and More upon examination of their most famous novels is their join belief in the corruption of the Church. Both recognized the problems of indulgenced, false appointees and immoral claims on forgiveness of sin. As a result both reflect these issues in their literary works.
