...nflicts the world for the first time entered into conflict with itself. Nations that for hundreds of years that had tolerated each other through themselves at one another in battle. Never had man seen such bloodshed and loss of life. This conflict completely changed the way in which man viewed the direction of his life. I have several reasons for which this conflict originated. The readings from “Visions of the West” point to an over zealous with his own achievements. For years the loss of spiritual structure and the rise of political and capital organization gave rise to a sense of a more powerful man. People moved from ideals that held together a common western culture into a more singular vision. Where there was once comradeship between nations competition took over. The focus of culture before this was on improving human life and explaining the mysteries of life. However, I think that with this optimism came a great deal of overconfidence. I see the end of the century when Soviet Communism fell in 1989. From 1914 until 1989 in some way or another man was always in competition. The conflict moved from direct battle to war with “client” countries where the forces of good and evil good fight it out. At times between these two years the world moved from the times of relative peace to times when nuclear war seemed imminent. At the end of this time the world seems to go back where it left off in 1913, with the pursuit of improving society. Cooperation is seen again as people work to end disease and bring ...
