...ngelo told his father that he wanted to be an artist, he was very much opposed. Michelangelo followed his own wishes however and studied painting in Ghirlandaio’s studio. He studied with others throughout his younger years, and accomplished many small works. His first major work, a sculpture titled “The Pieta”, depicts the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ across her lap. He finished it before he was twenty-five years old, and it still stands in St. Peter’s Basilica today. Another very famous work, “David”, is a sculpture of what many call a “perfect man”. It depicts the Biblical boy, David, with his slingshot and a worried look on his face. It is rumored that, upon seeing the perfect sculpture, many women faint. The Sistine Chapel, one of Michelangelo’s most famous works, was almost never done. Michelangelo opposed the commission to do the ceiling, his argument being that he was a sculptor, not a painter.
