After realizing that his coach had made a mistake, Michael took practicing basketball to another level. His new dedication to making the varsity team had drawbacks; he was cutting classes and going to the gym to practice. He practiced everyday with his brother, Larry (4 pg. 16). His hard work paid off because the University of North Carolina gave him a full athletic scholarship to come play basketball for their team (1). At North Carolina, Michael’s most important game in his college career cam in the championship game as a freshmen (2 pg. 45). He scored the game winning shot against Georgetown with five seconds remaining in the game. In his sophomore and junior seasons, he was voted College Basketball Player of the Year. Upon completion of his junior year, Michael declared himself eligible for the NBA draft. Through his three years at Carolina, he averaged 17.7 points per game, while maintaining a “B” average (3 pg. 65). After a great college career, Michael was chosen as the third overall pick of the Chicago Bulls in the 1984-85 draft. His first nine years in the NBA were extraordinary. Only after nine years of playing professional basketball, Michael had earned an enormous amount of awards and distinctions. Some of these include: seven consecutive scoring titles, seven consecutive appointments to the All-NBA First Team, six straight appointments to the NBA All-Defensive First Team, three most valuable player Awards, two Olympic gold medals, three NBA titles, a $2.5 million dollar contract with Nike, and over 20,000 points (1).
