...life and society. Kafka seemes to use these examples to explain to the reader about how the society he is living in is. Kafka feels that for his writing to make sense to us he needs to use fantastical and absurd examples to show us how he feels. Some examples that show these situations are Gregor’s dislike of his job, the effect his job and himself has on his family, and the way his family acts, all of which are very harsh. The short story opens with Gregor in his evil and disgruntled state, late for work. He is not happy with his job as a traveling sales man and states that his job is very important, yet he is growing tired and frustrated with it, “The upset of doing business is much worse than the actual business in the home office, and, besides, I’ve got the torture of traveling, worrying about changing trains, eating miserable food at all hours, constantly seeing new faces, no relationships that last or get more intimate. To the devil with it all!” Gregor seems to have a great amount of anger towards his job, which ends up leading to his increasing anger towards people and society as he knows. When Gregor’s office manager showed up at his house one could see the fear and anxieties in Gregor’s mind grow. Gregor does not like his job and he does not act as if he can handle all the pressures. On top of the pressures created by the office manager and society as a whole, the Samsa’s, certainly Gregor’s father, seem to take advantage of him. Gregor earns the basic and needed income that supports his family. “But of course he actually could have paid off more of his father’s debt to the boss with this extra money, and the clay on which he could have gotten rid of his job would have been much closer, but now things were undoubtedly better, the way his father had arranged them.” The poverty of the Samsa’s has put Gregor in a harsh position, which is a main component causing Gregor’s metamorphosis. Gregor’s family in general, gave him the attitude he has on life. Everyone took advantage of him to the point where he was the only means of the family’s survival.
