Leonard, wearing blue jeans and driving a pick-up truck drives off and Teddy follows a few minutes behind. In the building, Leonard confronts Jimmy and murderers him. He switches into Jimmy’s clothing and takes his car keys. Teddy arrives and explains to Leonard that he has already tracked down his wife’s attacker, but he only forgot about it. Teddy then proceeds to tell him that the whole Sammy Jenkins story is a figment of his imagination and that his wife did not die by the hand of the attackers but by Leonard hands himself. Leonard’s wife had diabetes and Leonard accidentally killed her by administering too much insulin. Leonard, furious by what he has heard from Teddy. He decides to manipulate himself into setting up Teddy as the suspect of his wife’s murder. He wrote himself a note like he did frequently, identifying Teddy’s license plate number as the murderers license plate number. Leonard Drives off away from Teddy and comes across a tattoo parlor where he gets the license plate number tattooed on his thigh. Teddy follows him there and tries to get Jimmy’s car keys from him (because he wants the money in the trunk) but Leonard does not give in and takes off. Leonard still wearing Jimmy’s clothes has no idea where he got them from and the car for that matter. He comes across a note in Jimmy’s pocket from a bar named Ferdy’s saying to meet a woman named Natalie. Assuming it is meant for him, Leonard heads to the bar to meet this woman called Natalie. Natalie is Jimmy’s girlfriend. Natalie sees the car pull up and that the drive is not Jimmy. Leonard enters the bar. For some reason Natalie had already heard of Leonard and his condition. Trying to test his condition in a distugusting manner spits in a mug of beer and Leonard not remembering she has done so drinks the beer. Natalie now knowing that Leonard’s condition is real takes him to her house. After watching television and looking through his folder for a while, Natalie returns. She then hides all the pens and pencils in her house and then starts insulting Leonard, provoking him until he hits her. While he desperately searches for some way to write a note for himself to remember what has just happened, Natalie goes out into her car and starts to smirk. After a few minutes she slams the car door and comes back into the house crying how someone names Dodd has just beaten her up. Dodd is another local drug dealer who is actually Jimmy’s boss. Jimmy was supposed to give Dodd the $200,000 that was in the trunk of his car. Not remembering what just has happened between Natalie and himself, Leonard is angry by what has just happened to Natalie and wants to defend her honor. She writes a description of Dodd for him. He gets in the car to go after Dodd but is distracted when he finds Teddy in his car. Teddy tells him not to trust Natalie and not to stay with her. Teddy tells hi to stay at the local discount inn. By then Leonard had forgotten that he wanted to go after Dodd and also that he is already checked in at the motel. The greedy and slimey desk clerk at the motel knows of his condition and rents him another room to get more money out of him. Leonard then calls an escort service to hire a prostitute. He tries to have her re create the night in which his wife was supposingly murdered. He then finds her snorting cocaine in the bathroom and asks her to leave. Leonard then drives to what it looks like a construction site where he burn’s some of his wife’s belongings. He stay’s that night there. As he leaves the site, Jimmy’s car is spotted by Dodd and looks puzzled why Leonard is driving Jimmy’s car. Dodd then chases Leonard but he gets away.
