Maria didn¡¯t give up mathematics yet, but in 1783 she published a book of collection full of complex essay relating to natural science and philosophy; the book is called Proposition Philosophicae. And book was mostly based on discussions she mostly had during the gathering of the intellectuals at her home. When she was age of twenty, she was trying to make a textbook for her brothers. To tutor them in mathematics. But it grew to a more serious effort and was published as a textbook later on. The textbook was called Analytical Institutions. The book was a great contribution to the mathematics. It combined many varieties of mathematics to an orderly way with her own interpretation of mathematics. The book was clearly explained. The book became popular and was translated into many different languages and was used as a textbook. The Analytical Institutions gave clear summary of the mathematic principles. Maria is best known for her curve called ¡°Witch of Agnesi.¡± Maria wrote the equation for this curve in form of y = a*sqrt(a*x-a*x)/x because she considered the x-axis to be the vertical axis and the y-axis to be the horizontal, but reference frame today use x horizontal and y vertical axis. The modern form of the curve is given by the Cartesian equation y*x^2=a^29a-y0 or y= a^3/(x^2+a^20. It¡¯s a versed sine curve, originally studied by Fermat. It was called a versiera, a word obtained from the Latin word verter, meaning ¡®to turn¡¯, but it was also an abbreviation for the Italian word avversiera, meaning ¡° the wife of the devil.¡± When her text was translated into English, the word versiera was confused with ¡°witch¡±, and the curve got translated into ¡°Witch of Agnesi.¡± Maria was elected to the Bologna Academy of Science after her success with her book Analytical Institution. The academy sent her a diploma and her name was added to the faculty. She had a debate in weather she accepted the position or not. She accepted position and served at the university until her fathers death. After her father¡¯s death she gave up math. Maria was a very religious woman. She devoted rest of her life to the poor and homeless sick people, especially women. When the Pio Instituto Trivulzo, was opened, a home for the ill and the infirm. Maria was give...
