The printed word coaxed people to the New World, helped give Americans an identity different from Europeans by encouraging and spreading concepts that were not the norm in Europe. The colonial newspapers resulted from economic, political, religious, cultural and social revolutions. The roots of American newspapers are found not in the isolation of the colonies but in the interrelationships of the colonies with each other and with England and Europe. The revolution gave the colonial press new functions to fulfill. As the thirteen British colonies slowly dissolved their ties with the mother country, newspapers played an increasingly important role in the growing dispute. Both Patriot and Loyalist writers used pamphlets and the weekly papers to attempt to conceive their neutral countrymen to support their side the nations political ideals. Public opinion was the basis of public policy, and the printing press provided the forum for it.
