When he was elected governor of New York. In the same year, when Andrew Jackson was the nominee for president, some members of the Democratic-Republican Party began calling themselves Democrats. Van Buren, one of the leaders of the new party, worked hard for Jackson’s election and was appointed secreatry of state when Jackson took office on March 4, 1829. In 1831, Van Buren was Minister to England. Only a few months after taking office, Van Buren signed governorship of New York to accept this new appointment. As secretary of state, Van Buren won the confidence of President Jackson, who chose him as his Vice Presidental running mate in election of 1832. From 1833 to 1837 he was vice president under Jackson. In 1836, Jackson urged his party to nominate Van Buren for President. On March 4, 1837 Martin Van Buren at age 55 was inaurated as the 8th president. The Panic of 1837 delepoved goverment funds that had been deposited in certain state banks were mismanged. Some of loans made by the banks with goverment funds had not been wise and were not repaid. As president, Van Buren urged the goverment funds be in the national treasury independent of state and private banks. In 1837 the Seminole Chief of Osceola were captured.
