In order to understand “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” it is important to comprehend what Martin Luther King, Jr. means by the concept of justice. The importance of the concept of justice is obvious because King presents his moral obligation for being in jail at the beginning of the letter by words: “I am in Birmingham because injustice is here.” King feels that his spiritual mission is to help people fight for justice no matter the consequences he could confront: “Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid.” This story found in the book of Acts of the New Testament and talks of Paul having a vision of a man begging him to come to Macedonia to help the people.
