... scuba diving can also be pursued. Indeed the waters off Bushranger's Bay have been declared a Marine Aquatic Reserve. At the north-eastern tip of the headland is Boston Point. It is a short, 30-metre walk down to the rocky shore where there is a memorial to four Australian soldiers who died in 1943 rescuing the 62-man crew of an American tanker, the Cities Service Boston, which hit an offshore reef during a storm then drove itself onto the rocks of Bass Point in order to avoid breaking up in deep water. At low tide a portion of the wreck can still sometimes be seen. Bushrangers Bay at Bass Point is a well-known scuba diving area and is regarded as one of the best on the New South Wales coast. Bass Point Headland and Marine Reserve 3km south with picnic areas and views. Bass Point is also a great location to go scuba diving and snorkelling. Kiltobranks History The Kiltobranks was a wooden screw steamer, with a cargo of blue metal and under the command of Capt Gardiner, was wrecked at Shellharbour on 21 February 1924. The remains of the steamer have not been found. The vessel was 272 tons, 40.75m in length, built by Rock Davis at Blackwall, NSW, in 1908. Registered at Sydney as 36 of 1908, Official No. 125170. Alexander Berry History A wooden screw steamer owned by the Ilawarra Steam Navigation Company when wrecked at Bass Point on 1 July 1901. Four of the five crew lost their lives in this tragic event. The vessel was 62tons, 24.6m in length, built by James Bower & Co at Pyrmont, NSW in 1873. Registered at Sydney as 6 of 1874, ...
