Finally she became so incapable of coping with her life that she entered a rest home, and then a hospital(21,22,23,24). This had to have been hard on seven year old Norma Jeane. From then one Norma Jeane’s childhood was filled with chaos and instability as she moved among foster families, relatives, family friends, and even an orphanage. Monroe lived with twelve sets of foster parents and at least one stay in a Los Angeles orphanage, where she worked in the dinning room and pantry. She only remembered her mother as “the woman with red hair” who sometimes visited her. Norma Jeane received a sketchy education at various schools(Moritz 304). Although Marilyn had little education and often portrayed a ditzy blonde she was very smart and had a very prosperous career. The first few years of Marilyn Monroe’s career were very hard for her. After she signed with Twentieth-Century Fox, Norma Jeane Mortenson changed her name to Marilyn Monroe. She only had minor roles in several movies. During one period of unemployment she posed nude for a pin-up calendar that would later become a collector’s item(Marilyn 1). According to CMG Worldwide: Marilyn’s official website, Marilyn’s first movie role was a bit part in 1947’s The Shocking Miss Pilgrim. She series of inconsequential characters, until 1950, when John Huston’s thriller The Asphalt Jungle provided Marilyn with a small but influential role. Later that year, Marilyn’s performance as Claudia Caswell in All About Eve earned her further praise. From then on Marilyn worked steadily in movies such as: Lets Make it Legal, As Young as You Feel, Monkey Business and Don’t bother to knock. It was her performance in 1953’s Niagara, Marilyn played Rose Loomis, a beautiful young wife who plots to kill her older, jealous husband(2). It was this performance that delivered her to stardom. Marilyn’s career had grown significantly. Photoplay Magazine had voted Marilyn Monroe the Best New Actress of 1953, and at twenty seven years old she was undeniably the best-loved blonde bombshell in Hollywood(CMG 3). Although this prestigious award thrilled Marilyn she was unhappy with the way she was portrayed. Monroe was once quoted for saying, “I don’t want to play sex roles anymore. I’m tired of being know as the girl with the shape(CMG n.pag).” Taking that into consideration, in 1955 Marilyn was ready to shed her “shallow blonde bomb-shell” image. It had gotten her into the spot life, but now that she had the opportunity and experience, Marilyn wanted to purse serious acting. She moved from Hollywood to New York City to study under Lee Strasberg at his Actors’ Studio. In 1956, Marilyn started her own motion picture company, Marilyn Monroe Productions.
